I am HYLAN

As a social worker turned yoga therapist, my deepest desire is for everyone to live their most fulfilling and desirable life, no matter their age. This may seem like a tall order, but vitality can be life long. My most inspiring clients are in their 70s and 80s. They remain open to life - to exploration, to new experiences - and life remains open to them.

Unfortunately, our culture does not value aging. We fear it. We run and hide from it. We try to prevent it for as long as we can with expensive treatments and face creams. As a 42 year old woman with two young children, I certainly feel these pressures. The push/pull of trying to keep my youthful appearance and abilities, while also wanting to fight back against this pressure and simply embrace aging and all the beauty that comes with the elder season of life.

So what is it about aging? Why do we fear and resist it instead of embracing the entire, beautiful spectrum of life? I think a big concern that underlies this fear is the concern of loosing our independence. Our active lifestyles. Maybe even our connections to others. However, when we have a practice that focuses on mindful movement, of incorporating habits that help us maintain our mobility, spunk, and connection to ourselves and others, we can more fully embrace the gifts of the vata season of life.

This is the work that I do. What I am so passionate about. To not just live a long life, but to live a healthy, vital, independent life and to help others do the same. When we move mindfully and with intention, we alleviate aches and pains, and improve mobility, strength, and internal and external awareness. This is a powerful practice for any age, as I can 100% attest to! And sure, the earlier we start the more benefits we may see. AND, we can see phenomenal gains even in our 70s and beyond. It is never too late for change.

If you have a desire to move through the mid to late seasons of life with energy, zest, ease and confidence, and you’d like to know more about how this rainy weather loving gal can help, contact me here.
